5 Top Tips For Planning Your Wedding Flowers.

Choosing the perfect flowers for your wedding day can feel pretty overwhelming given that they’re often a very prominent feature at a wedding, that can make a huge impact on the vibe and overall design aesthetic of the day! Sorry if I’ve made you even more nervous with that sentence, keep reading on and I’ll calm your nerves, I promise!

GUIDANCE from a florist legend!

To make sure you had all of the best info I enlisted the help of Tiff from Noah and The Fox. Tiff is based in the Hunter Valley, NSW and has been creating show stopping floral designs for weddings for a very long time now. If you want to see more of Tiff’s work head to her socials @noahandthefox.
Below are my top 5 takeaways from our chat:

One: Book in your dream florist 12 - 18 months out (peak wedding season)

BUT… know your date and venue first.
Florists are one of the in demand suppliers in the wedding industry, so if you have a particular florist that you would like to work with reach out to them as soon as you’ve locked your venue and date in. Florists will want to know this, not only for availability but also as there may be some flowers that aren’t available in the month of your wedding. However, there are ways around this AND you don’t need to know or decide on the exact designs / colours / flowers this far out…

Two: Create a mood board of designs, flowers and colours that stand out to you.

In your mood board if there is a flower you absolutely LOVE, highlight it (you don’t need to know it’s name!) and if there’s a flower you really don’t want in the mix, also highlight it, both are super important for your florist to know.
After seeing your mood board and chatting about the flowers you love and don’t love so much, your florist will be able to start offering you suggestions on flower options, colours, designs and really getting into the planning process!

Three: Your choice of flowers can change in the lead up to your wedding.

For me the thought of having to decide on the floral colours and designs I want 12 - 18 months out was a daunting one, and when I asked Tiff about this she mentioned that flowers can actually be changed quite close to the wedding (within reason of course!) Which means if your tastes change as time goes by you should be able to work with your florist to tweak the design to suit the final vibe of your wedding day.
My advice on this would be to keep in touch with your florist along the way, and if you’re thinking of going in a different direction at any stage, keep them in the loop on this so they can be your guiding light along the way, ensuring you end up with designs you absolutely love!

Four: “Real Touch” faux flowers are a thing!

Tiff mentioned that there are now some pretty amazing artificial flowers available, that, once added in amongst fresh flowers, don’t look any different! So if there is a type of flower you love and it’s unavailable fresh, there’s a possibility it could be available as a faux flower, and added to your designs.

Five: What can you do with the bouquet after the wedding?

A tradition that Tiff mentioned that’s taken over from the throwing of the bouquet, is passing it on to one of the newlyweds mothers (which I think is really sweet!)
If keeping the bouquet or some of the flowers is something you want to do, you can hang them upside down and dry them out, doing it this way means you avoid the stems and flowers shrivelling too much, you will however loose a lot of the colour from the flowers. To keep the colour and preserve the flowers there are companies that will set them in resin or preserve them in a boxed frame. Ask your florist for recommendations of companies that offer this.

And one more thing before I wrap this up… if your florist sends you photos of flowers at 3am, this isn’t weird, it’s passion for the job! haha! As creatives we tend to get a bit excited and need to share our thoughts as soon as they strike! So take it as a compliment, but maybe leave your phone on DND ;)
